Humans are tribal by nature – we like to be in communities. But in an era where people in the US drive around with bumper stickers that say “F*ck Your Feelings”, is it really any wonder that online communities are full of nasty, angry people? Throughout history, an effect way to gain political power is to find a group of people (who usually can’t fight back) and point the finger and say “THOSE people are the reason you’re unhappy!”
Worked in Germany. Worked in England, and in the US.
People are angry because houses and cars cost a lot of money, and so does gas. People are angry because they can’t find a good paying job, and even a college degree is no “fast pass.” Times are harder than before.
But can I tell you something? In the US, the people at the top of the org chart are keeping a far greater percentage of profit than before. Wealth inequity is the REAL problem, but who’s talking about it? We’re going to get tax breaks – OK… but so are the filthy rich. And they already pay less taxes because the game is rigged.
No matter who you are, our politics pit us against the other half of the country, when the real enemy is the guys at the top who keep all the money. Those people don’t want us to talk about wealth inequity. Because if we did, they’d be in deep trouble.
Why don’t we see some candidate make that his focus (not counting Sanders?) Because neither party will advance a character like that. That’s why. Most Senators are rich.
What does this have to do with people looking for fights about plugins vs vintage hardware? I think it has everything to do with it. People are mad, so they want to take it out on someone.
YouTube probably loves it because it increases engagement.
So we keep going back to the channels we like and leaving an opinion, and then getting attacked. Because we want to belong to a community. But, honestly, show me ONE YouTube synth channel that doesn’t have any dickheads in the comments section. Just one. Not counting mine, because I have a tiny channel so there aren’t many comments.
My New Year’s Resolution should have been that I’ll avoid posting any opinions on any synth channels. You can, if you want to. You’re welcome to it. I’d recommend you find a channel where the host is popular and then agree with everything they say. You might find some success. Hey, these people are too stupid to have actual intellectual debates. Don’t bother.
OK, I do feel a little better now.
